Modern-day Alexandria is built on the ruins of the ancient city founded by Alexander in 331 BC. It was once home to Pharos, the Alexandrian lighthouse which was one of the Ancient Wonders of the world, as well as the Library of Alexandria, another marvel of the ancient world which was only recently rebuilt. Even today, much of Alexandria’s Greek heritage remains intact, notably the Roman Theatre.
In the 19th century, Alexandria became an important Mediterranean commercial hub, attracting a wealth of foreign settlers, including Greeks, Armenians, and Italians. The city stretches along the Mediterranean coast and is instantly recognizable by its 15-kilometer-long seafront Corniche, which can be helpful in orienting newcomers around the city. The Corniche is dotted with countless restaurants, cafes, and other notable attractions, such as the historic Cecil Hotel, renowned Greek Club, and El Montazah Palace.
Alexandria’s climate is typically Mediterranean: summers are warm and humid while winters are mild and moderately rainy. The city is moreover famous among Egyptians for having the best seafood restaurants in the country.
